Where does our oil really come from?

18 Dec 2008

Check out this fascinating mashup between Google Maps and the oil import statistics for the USA since 1973. Click and drag (or click the play button) on the timeline to see our sources of oil change over time. Especially enlightening are the relative impact of drilling offshore and in ANWAR. Click to turn them on and see their (miniscule) impact as a percentage of daily imports when they would be expected to reach peak production in 20-30 years.

What’s surprising to me? The massive proportion of our oil that comes from Nigeria and the relative paucity of middle eastern sources with the obvious exception of Saudi Arabia.
